The Slayer
Name: Cordelia ChaseBorn: Sunnydale, CA. May 22nd 1990. Occupation: Student at Sunnydale High. Chosen One. I'm gonna go back to that church, and I'm going to kill every vampire I find there." [Welcome to Bizarro World] Description: For a Slayer, Cordelia Chase is more than a little unusual. Of course, that's not saying much; all Slayers are wildly different from one another. But they usually share at least one thing in common: they were meant to be Chosen. Cordy, on the other hand, wasn't. Unknown to the girl in question, the demon Anyanka was responsible for her being called, fulfilling the wish of Daphne Chase, Cordelia's mother, before the girl was born. Anyanka altered her destiny, and so the future of humanity.
Cordelia is selfish, at least in part. She does care about others, and has several close friends. But her duty is carried out more from a sense of self-importance than a sympathy for the rest of the world. Or, this was true until certain events transpired to cause her to change her world view slightly (see Fallen Angel through to Altered to Fit). She isn't as emotionally stable as Slayers usually are. While her close associates give her support, Cordelia does not have great restraint on her impulses, and it can cause trouble occasionally (see esp. Fallen Angel and Changes).
Whatever the future holds for Cordelia Chase (and there are hints that it may be something special) we know that she will be the sole guardian of the barrier between Hell and Earth until she finally succumbs to its force, and the next Slayer is called. That's not to say Cordelia is a bad Slayer. On the contrary, she is in fact a very good one, having saved the world from total destruction single handedly on more than one occasion. But, while she inherited the strength and skill given to a Slayer, she didn't have the character traits that usually lead one to be Chosen in the first place.
This Slayer can be occasionally callous in her attitudes, not considering the full impact of her words and actions on others. Her sexual relationship with Angel, the vampire, is almost entirely about personal fulfilment, and she spends little time considering his feelings in the matter (though this changes, as does much, around the time of You Can Always Come Back). In the past, she has been reckless with the heart and soul of her good friend, and possibly next to be Chosen, Faith. She also plays with the feelings of her Watcher, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, who is clearly very attracted to her. (These feelings come to a head in Altered to Fit.)
Despite all this, however, Cordelia is at heart a good person, striving to do right and battle the forces of darkness. Like anyone else, she faces temptations on the way, and occasionally falls prey to them, but she will always come back on top in the end. She is highly skilled (enhanced by years of gymnastics and cheerleading) and with great strength. Her refusal to play entirely by the rules of the game (this goes as far as her carrying around a handgun on many occasions) works in her favor for the most part, throwing the enemy off guard, not knowing quite what to expect.
