Description: Once, this vampire was known as Angelus, the one with the angelic face. Sired by Darla, the two set about to wreak such havok on mankind as had never been seen before. The viciousness of Angelus was renowned - even today, a hundred years since he stopped his evil ways, his name is told as one to remember among vampires. He traveled the world with Darla, and sired his share of vampires also (including Spike and Drusilla, in Sunnydale presently). It was in 1898 that he made a mistake that would change his unlife forever.

He killed a Gypsy girl, beloved of her tribe. In vengeance, they restored Angel's soul, allowing him to feel the grief and remorse for all the horror he had unleashed in his days on Earth. He left Europe, fleeing to America, where he spent nearly a hundred years in the gutter, barely aware of anything.

Until, in the mid 1990s, a demon called Whistler found him, cleaned him up, and sent him thousands of miles across the country to Sunnydale, the Mouth of Hell. There, Angel met Cordelia Chase, the Slayer, and the two were instantly attracted.

Now, the vampire is involved sexually with Miss Chase, although there is not much of a relationship to speak of. They do care for one another, though it is more of a need than a love. Both of them find solace in one another, but both also know they are an inherent danger to the other. Angel is a vampire, and should his soul be removed again, it would go badly for Cordelia. And she, as the Slayer, knows that her duty is to kill Angel. Unbeknownst to the vampire himself (though Cordelia is aware of it) should he ever experience a moment of true happiness, his soul will indeed leave him. Since his and Cordy's relationship is far from perfect, he cannot achieve that as yet with her, so that is not (so far) a problem.

Nonetheless, his soul can still be stolen in other ways. In Fallen Angel, the mayor of Sunnydale happens upon a spell to own Angel's soul, and uses it to his advantage. Angel, who is intimitely engaged with Cordelia at the time, reverts to evil, and takes some of Cordy's goodness with him, especially when he feeds brutally from her.

When he was given back his soul, he was devastated with what he had done to Cordelia, and received punishment back for it also, when she (torn by her raging emotions) violated him in his own apartment (Changes). They eventually reunited (You Can Always Come Back), but their relationship, such as it is, can never be the same again.

With Whistler on hand, Angel managed to get back some of his will, but he is forever damaged by the events surrounding his loss of soul and it remains to be seen just what will become of this 240 plus year old vampire.

Technical: Angel created by Joss Whedon, played by David Boreanaz.
