Update
05.10.05
Just an update on Bens progress.
21st July 2005, Ben's appontment at the Allen Ward in the Royal Victoiria Childrens Hospital to have a Videophleroscopy and to get a speech valve.
We were so excited abut getting the speech valve, thinking this is going to be great, we will hear our child cry, laugh and talk. We thought it was a simple as putting a valve over the trachy and that was it..............
Oh no, wasnt as simple as that. Ben hated it from the second he seen it. Ben wouldnt let the speech therapist put it anywere near him. We had to hold his arms and distract him with toys, which wasnt working very well, we got it on. Then the only thing we could think of that keeps him happy is to let him walk. We held his hands and went for a walk down the corridor. It was absolutly brilliant, to hear Ben make noises and blow bubbles was such a happy time. But it only lasted a few minutes, he got distressed and really wanted it of. He started coughing and chokng
Ben has now got a 3.5 Neo Shiley tube in. He went to Belfast City Hospital on 12th August 2005 fro a Broncoscopy, dilation of the airway and the larger tube. All went well. Bit anxious at first as with the broncoscopy, dilation and larger tube, Bens airway was sore and swollen. We felt so sorry for him as he was trying to talk for a week with no sound.
Ben however can manage to speak without the aid of a speach valve. He can fairly shout "mama" at 6AM!!!
