Bird's life:- Bird species:- For budding birder :-

Just out and south of Ipoh, the mining area gets very extensive. This destination, Malim Nawar, was a township in the midst of all the white sands, to support the activities. Today, with the industry gone, the township is experiencing a revival - farming. The countless number of mining ponds can now be converted to farm ducks.

For the birders, they never had it so good for the last 30 years, thousands upon thousands of hectares of waste lands and undisturbed vegetations were home to many local wild birds and migrants. Today, human encroachments is making such habitats fast disappearing. Yet within a stone throw from town, there are all weather navigable tracks do take birders to some fantastic birding sites.

Track within the vicinity is like a maze. The GPS readings given provide an indication as to its vicinity. You will have to get a guide to bring you into the area. There are too many unmarked junctions. This sturdy bridge is the best landmark as to your starting point.

A bridge -part of the structure along this unpaved road to Tanjong Tualang.

After a turn-off, there is a 3 branches fork road. Our landmark is this research station for the Ministry of Lands & Mines. The picture also show the condition of the track.

A green signboard and a proper red building [not shown]

The open country and wetland birds are - Egrets, Heron and Bittern. There are other ground birds - Sandpipers, Quail, Ducks and  Rails.

In the secondary forest would be the Barbets and Cuckoos.

Special prominence to the Swamphens and Lapwings. The whole district is very well service by tracks as this one shown in the picture below. Then again most track are also on top of bunds separating the bodies of wetlands.

A colony of Herons is also one of the attractions.

One particular site hold a high concentration for a big variety of birds

Farms like this one are gradually reclaiming most of the unused waste lands. Most them duck farm, we had seen a few fish farms as well.

contemporary garden. This one shown in the picture is exceptionally large, reaching a height o reason for their waiting and also what go on beyond that.

"Birders" in action. Note that there are also pockets with tall trees.

This picture and the main scene below show that what was once a perfectly conducive habitats is slowly be converted to agriculture land..

On this day when the pictures was taken, this place was a hive of activities. Nests of young chicks moving about, Herons and Egrets on the tall trees, Kingfishers on Spikes rising out of the water and Terns in the air.

A denuded pond with heavy vegetation exterminated and water level lowered.

We were looking into paradise lost. This is just one bad scene. There are still quite a few sanctuaries that needs a little efforts to reach.
