MIDGE

Midges' Story:

Midge, taken Summer 2001, aged 14

Midge is a German Shepherd Cross, what the rest of her is - we don't know!!

She was born in either 1987 or 1988 - again we don't know for certain. What we do know is that she was tied to the gate of Ranvilles Animal Shelter (Stubbington Ark) near Fareham, Hampshire on the night of December 30th 1988 as a pup of around 6/9 months. It was only because the Centre Managers dogs asked to go out that she was not forced to spend the whole night tied to the gate.

When she came home, it was apparent the Midge had not been walked on a lead - she was frightened of literally everything! Blades of grass moving in the breeze, cracks in the pavement, shadows, everything!

It took two years to get her confident when out walking.

She never took to obedience, if the dog next to her moved and the handler was cross, it would send Midge into a panic - I wasn't going to ask her to cope with that. She tried agility, but although she got some clear rounds, she was never fast enough to get a place. She retired from agility at eleven years old.

Midge also competed in flyball and although never the fastest of dogs, she enjoyed herself and was could be relied on to keep going. On more than one occasion she saved the team from having to withdraw from competition. She still competes occasionally even now.

Midge still loves flyball, taken Summer 2001.
