Trunk Hinge Paint Protection

Have you ever wondered how the factory and some of the more particular restorers kept the trunk lid hinges from rubbing and chafing the paint off themselves? I don't know how the factory did it, but I learned to accomplish this small feat in the following manner:

  1. Fabricate a pair of u-bolts out of 5/16" diameter rod. Using a 7" length of rod, bend the rod at right angles to form a "squared" u-shape. The legs of the "u" should be 1-3/4" long and overall width should be 3-3/8".

2.  With trunk lid removed, insert a 3/8" shim between the two halves of the hinge (see photo attachment).

3. Push the hinge into the closed position while keeping the shim in place.

4. Hold in the closed position by inserting the u-bolt through hole and around lower half of hinge as shown in photo.
