THE WELL
This place was a natural well  (one of many such holes--called cenotes--in the limestone structure of Yucatan--an area covering  93,000 square miles) into which maidens were tossed to survive the day in the green waters.  Those who survived were pulled out with ropes.  The others were, supposedly, have become Mayan gifts to the Gods!  Ah, the glory of it all!
