The Feathered Serpant, Quetzalcoatl, also known as Kukulkan (kukul meaning "precious feathers" and can being "serpent"), is seen here in the middle picture.  Two serpent heads, mouth gaping open, tongue hanging hungrily out, start at the base of the steps, on each side, with their bodies stretching up to the top..

Check out this close up of the monsterous snake-head, with its stone tongue like some reluctant seating pad for the tired tourist to rest upon. Just watch out that you don't get gobbled up!
