The Feathered Serpant, Quetzalcoatl, also known as
Kukulkan (kukul meaning "precious feathers" and can being
"serpent"), is seen here in the middle picture. Two serpent heads,
mouth gaping open, tongue hanging hungrily out, start at the base of the
steps, on each side, with their bodies stretching up to the top..

with its stone tongue like some reluctant seating pad for the tired tourist
