Zavala and Maverick Counties, 2 September 2003
Greg Lasley and i planned to meet in Atascosa County on 2 September to survey Odonates, but were rained out. Instead we went to under-Oded Zavala County where we found and photographed a number of species new for the county. Later i went on to Maverick County mostly in search of Lepidoptera. Photos are posted below.
A complete report of the trip follows.

14 September 2003 (v.14)
Greg Lasley & I attempted to survey the Odonates of Atascosa County Tuesterday, 2 September 2003, but were stymied by heavy rains. Out of enthusiasm to get some work done, we drove west until we left the storm zone AND were in a county that needed work. That turned out to be Zavala County. We headed home different ways in the afternoon -- i drove through Maverick County in search of additional Lepidoptera and to scout promising Giant-Skipper acreage in Val Verde County.
We were in seach of new dragonfly records and found and photographed a number of them (photographed 25 out of 30 species seen total; of those 17 were potentially new). As always i located and photographed Lepidoptera as well, though there were few encountered owing partly to lack of sun, and partly due to lack of nectar sources. Most found were on Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) and Goatsbeard (Clematis drummondii). I searched for stands of Arroyo Twinevine (Sarcostemma cynanchoides) but found none. Most notable were two metalmarks found at the one location i got to in Maverick County before low sun stopped activity.
As always i crave corrections and discussion on identifications i have made of any of these critters.
USGS = previously undocumented records according to the USGS website and John Abbott's Odonata Central. I am aware that the USGS site is behind and that Dr. Abbott is redesigning his site, but both remain the most accurate publicly available references i know, and thus their usage as a guide to places needing work and rough working documents for what needs confirming.
* = Photographed (sometimes poorly); pictures visible on my website at:
http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/margaret/203/id66.htm
Included below is the usual list of the additional critters seen on the trip.
Thanks to Robert Nuelle, Mike Overton, Dan Hardy, Greg Lasley, Janet Rathjen, John Abbott, Tom Langschied and Bob Behrstock for identifications, confirmations, commentary and corrections.
