Richmond Intl. Raceway

The best race of 1998 took place at Richmond (Jeff Burton v Jeff Gordon). That exciting finish was as clean as it gets. Don't expect to finish the day with all of your fenders in perfect shape here. This track can be brutal.

Qualifying

As with any race, qualifying is as important as the race itself. Take some extra time to practice qualifying on cold tires. This will benefit you during qualifying and at the start of the race.

Cornering Speed

First, having a loose car is a must. Turns 1 and 2 should be taken at 95mph. Turns 3 and 4 should be taken in the 90-95 mph range. These speeds may seem slow but they will allow you to keep the inside line while saving your tire. Remember, Jeff Burton proved that having the preferred line is key.

Driving Line

Here, you have some options. You can brake very late going into 1 and 2 or you can brake lightly and coast into 1 and 2. Hard charging is great for passing while coasting is great for conserving your tires.

No matter how you drive through the corners, your line through the front stretch should always be out against the wall. This allows for optimum speed and acceleration. Make sure your gear ratio is set to take advantage of the bow in the front stretch.

Passing

Whether you qualify first or last you are going to have to pass somebody somtime. Get used to it. Most good passes are done by outbraking your opponent (typical short track style). The AI are very generous when it comes to fighting for a position. You can usually get a fender, or more, down on them as you enter the turn and then they will give you the position. If you are able to pass just watch them, or other cars as you start to accelerate off of the corner. The AI likes to drive 2 wide through the straights and off the turns.

Words of Caution

1 - With a loose set up and cold tires (restarts and the start of the race) you are always in danger of losing the rear end of the car. Once your tires get under you, you should be ok but beware until then.

2 - Watch out for the pit entrance. A bad pass can end your day abruptly.
