Dialing in your Qualifying set up:
When setting up a stock car during the race weekend you should make changes to the set-up until the car feels comfortable to you all the way around the track. While this is can be impossible at some tracks, there is always bit of compromise in setting up a car. Give a little in turn one to make it through turn three. Once the car feels good then you are ready to tweak it for qualifying. Qualifying is a one or two lap race against the clock, in which you are trying to get every last horsepower out of the car. Here's what you can do:
- Loose is fast: Build a little looseness into your set up to allow you to get through the turns a little bit faster.
- Less weight equals more speed! Empty the fuel tank to the bare minimum. Remember this will make you tight so you may have to loosen the car up a little bit more.
- Shorten fourth gear: By shortening fourth by two or three steps you will gain more speed at the end of the straightaways. You should be red-lining the tach' by the ned of the straightaways.
- Softer shocks: Softening the rear shocks will move some of the cars weight forward, helping to compensate for the light load in the fuel tank.
- Tires: The tires are your only connection to the track so you need to get them hot to turn fast q'ing laps. For tires that run cold try a hefty decrease in air pressure. On the superspeedways try overinflating the tires to 60 psi.
