Constance, as heiress of the Duchy of Brittany, was the focal point of a struggle between France and England over influence upon the affairs and future of the duchy. Per Cokayne's "Complete Peerage", in the article on Richmond, Constance married KING HENRY of England's (RIN 761) son, Geoffrey, in 1181. Five years later Geoffrey died. Constance bore a posthumous son to Geoffrey - Arthur - who was destined to become, in his turn, the focal point of intrigues by all seeking power in the duchy of Brittany. In 1187, about a year after Geoffrey's death, KING HENRY arranged a second marriage for Constance to his chosen candidate, Ranulf, Earl of Chester (RIN 2026*). Constance was an unwilling bride and the predictable problems ensued. In 1196, Constance was captured and imprisoned by her husband. This act sparked a rebellion against the new English king, Richard I, throughout Brittany. Richard quickly supressed it and by 1198, Constance was free again. A year later she repudiated her marriage to the Earl of Chester and married GUY, COUNT DE THOUARS (RIN 2015). This marriage was arranged by KING PHILIP AUGUSTUS of France (RIN 3163), now the chief nemesis of the Angevins. Constance seems to have spent her later years quite paecefully. She died two years after GUY.
Galliou and Jones' book, "The Bretons": ". . . the harsh rule of HENRY II and Richard I, who was equally unwilling to give Duchess Constance and her precocious son a free reign, caused mounting resentment. After Richard's death in April 1199, it drove Arthur into the arms of KING PHILIP AUGUSTUS (RIN 3163) and opened a new chapter for the duchy as a direct fief of the French crown".
Although not our ancestor, an understanding of the short life of Duke Arthur is imperative for understanding the general flow of events in Brittany as he was the focal point during these years. In a word, he was the gateway to French ascendancy in the duchy. Briefly here's the chronology of events: The French crown had had very little influence in Brittany for two generations (i.e. the Days of LOUIS VI). However, KING HENRY II of ENGLAND had been compelled to acknowledge fealty to the KING OF FRANCE in orded to legally hold his continental lands. In 1158-59, when HENRY had intervened in Brittany to help end the civil war, it was with the express permission of LOUIS VII of France. In 1169 Duke Geoffrey performed homage for Brittany to his brother, Henry, the young king, in his position as Duke of Normandy. The young Henry, in turn performed homage for Normandy to KING LOUIS VII. The suzerianty of the KING OF FRANCE over Brittany, nominal for so long, became more of a reality when, during the quarrels of the Angevins, Geoffrey turned directly to KING PHILLIP AUGUSTUS, with whom he formed a passionate friendship. When Geoffrey was killed, PHILIP claimed wardship over Geroffrey's daughter, Alienor, but HENRY II was too shrewd to allow her to escape his clutches. Geoffrey's death, the third crusade, and King Richard's energetic involvement in his continental domains delayed for a few years further Capetian advances in Brittany. The ill feelings generated by King Richard in relation to the DUCHESS CONSTANCE and the frustrated ambitions of Arthur, especially when King JOHN succeeded to the English throne upon Richard's untimely death, allowed PHILIP the opportunity had been long awaiting. First, in return for his support, including the promise of marriage to his daughter, Marie, PHILIP persuaded Arthur to perform leige homage in 1199. [Note that this homage was DIRECTLY TO PHILIP as contrasted to the indirect homage performed thirty years earlier by his father, Geoffrey]. Almost immediately, PHILIP renounced this direct homage and allowed Arthur to perform homage to KING JOHN in his position as Duke of Normandy. Then, when KING JOHN refused to do homage to PHILIP for his continental possessions, PHILIP was able, in 1202, to declare JOHN in forfeit of these lands which, of course, included Brittany. Then PHILIP again accepted Arthur's homage. Kings of France from this point were the immediate suzerains of the Duchy of Brittany. The murder of Arthur by KING JOHN around Easter, 1203, confirmed the Bretons in their hatred of the Angevins. Many of them took part in the campaigns to expel JOHN from his continental possessions."
