Per Galliou and Jones' book, "The Bretons": For some years Brittany was effectually partitioned between the acting Duke Eudes and Hoel, whose principal base was the county of Nantes. Eventually (perhaps with Angevin conniviance) the citizens of Nantes expelled Hoel in 1156. In the same year, Conan IV, certainly with the blessing of KING HENRY II, who confirmed his succession as Earl of Richmond, returned to the duchy and succeeded in wresting Brittany from his step-father Eudes, and was recognized as Duke of Brittany. This put an end to the civil war which had been in progress since 1148 between Eudes and Conan's uncle Hoel.
Per Cokayne's "Complete Peerage", in the article on Richmond, In 1158, Geoffrey, the brother of KING HENRY II of England (RIN 761) died. Geoffrey had been Count of Nantes in Brittany. Conan siezed the county as his own and, in response, HENRY II ordered the honor of Richmond siezed and crossed over to Brittany to bring his rebellious vassal to heel. Conan hastened to meet HENRY at Avarranches where he surrendered Nantes to HENRY and made peace with him. Conan spent the rest of his years mainly in Brittany. In 1160, however, he probably returned briefly to England to marry MARGARET, sister of the King of Scotland. Somewhat amicable relations were apparently maintained between Conan and KING HENRY as, in 1166 , Conan betrothed his 5 (or less) year old daughter, CONSTANCE, to HENRY'S son, Geoffrey. The major significance of this betrothal was the affirmation of Conan's total subservience to HENRY. CONSTANCE was Conan's only child and his heiress.
Back to "The Bretons": "Conan, whose reign was continually troubled by quarrels with a turbulent nobility by now unaccustomed to close ducal control, agreed to hand over the administration of most of Brittany to HENRY to keep for the child couple. During the last five years of his life, Conan simply held the lordship of Guincamp, wrested from his uncle, Count Henri of Treguier, whilst the Angevins hurried to impress on the duchy the indelible marks of central authority that characterized rule in all their scattered possessions."
