"At his death in 1314, Gilbert [de CLARE, Earl of Gloucester] left no children, so that his co-heiresses were his three sisters, Eleanor, MARGARET and Elizabeth, who split the lands, worth some L6,000 gross, between them. Eleanor was already married to the younger [Hugh] Despenser. . . Cokayne's "Complete Peerage (Despenser, pp.270-271). Prior to the execution of her husband, Eleanor had been comitted to the tower. Her lands were restored to her in 1328 and she pledged her homage and fealty to the king. She was abducted from Hanley Castle by Sir William la Zouche de Mortimer, who subsequently maried her. She and her new husband were besieging the Castle of Caerphilly (Eleanor's birthplace), when they were arrested and she was imprisoned in Devizes Castle. Eleanor had been accused of stealing some jewels - probably those which had been siezed by Queen Iseabelle from her first husband. She was ordered released by King Edward III, but the release was delayed because ROGER DE MORTIMER, EARL OF MARCH (RIN 684), coveted their lands in Glamorganshire, and refused to allow their release until these lands were given to him.
