Know men present and future that I Margaret de Quency countess of Winchester have given, granted and by this my charter confirmed to Hugh de Ver in free marriage with Hawise my daughter £4 8s worth of rent, namely 20s rent which Roger de Belegrave owed me with the homage and service which was due to me, and 17s 6d rent in Laughton which Geoffrey de Cranford owed me with the homage and service which was due to me, and 50s 6d rent in Thurmaston which Alexander de Witeby owed me with the homage and service which was due to me. To have and to hold of me and my heirs to them and their heirs who will be born of Hawise, well, peacefully, freely and quietly in free marriage.* And if it should happen, which God forbid, that Hawise should die without an heir begotten by Hugh, all the said rent will revert peacefully together with the homage and service into my hands or the hands of my heirs. And be it known that if I Margaret or my heirs can acquire and deliver to Hugh those six virgates of land with appurtenances which the prior of Brackley and Henry de Faffinton hold in the vill of Wigston Magna or if we have made an exchange to the value of the said six virgates in the same county before he takes Hawise his wife to his home, then the aforenamed £4 8s rent will revert peacefully to me and my heirs. And I Margaret and my heirs will warrant to Hugh and Hawise his wife and their heirs who will be born of Hawise all the said rent, as is aforesaid, against all people. In order that this should be valid I have affixed my seal to the present writing. Witnessed by John de Beauchamp, Ernald de Boys, William de Chapwell, Everard de Trumpithon, John de Hulecotes, Fulk de Vaux, Geoffrey de Capell, Peter de Beche, and many others.

Margaret countess of Winchester made fine with the lord king for 400 marks in order that her daughter Hawise might be married to Hugh son and heir of R[obert] de Vere, late earl of Oxford. She will render 100 marks to the lord king at Easter in the seventh year of his reign [1223] 100 marks at Michaelmas [29 September] in the same year, 100 marks at Easter in year 8 [1224], and 100 marks at the following Michaelmas in the same year.

Notes
General:
Per Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . ." (50:25), he was Count of Meulan and Earl Of Worcester.

He was closely allied to his younger twin brother ROBERT. See his notes from Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Leicester, pp. 527-530).

Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (appendix I to v.VII, pp.737-738). He inherited the Norman and French lands of his father as well as the English lands which in 1068 had been held by his grandfather. Although at first faithful to KING HENRY I (RIN 789), he soon joined in a rebellion against him, holding his castle at Brionne against THE KING. It is noteworth that his brother, ROBERT, who is constantly found acting with him, did not join him in this revolt. He was taken prisoner by RANULPH of BAYEUX (RIN 951). KING HENRY compelled Waleran to surrender his only remaining stronghold, the castle of Beaumont, and kept him prisoner for 5 years. After KING HENRY's death, at whose deathbed he was present, he adhered to KING STEPHEN (RIN 3890), who in 1136, promised him the hand of his infant daughter. Waleran helped his brother, ROBERT in his private war against Ralph de Tosny [Toeni], whom he captured. He helped supress KING STEPHEN's enemies in Normandy and, along with his brother, became one of THE KING's chief advisors. He headed the party opposed to Roger, Bishop of Salisbury. He was created Earl of Worcester about this time. He was one of the chief instigators of the seizure of the bishops at Oxford in 1139. At the outbreak of the civil war, he was sent by KING STEPHEN to escort THE EMPRESS MAUD (RIN 788) to Bristol. At the Battle of Lincoln in 1140/1, Waleran fled at the outset. He came to an agreement with GEOFFREY OF ANJOU (RIN 787) in Normandy, who gave him the castle of Montfort-sur-Rislel. He went on crusade. In a private war against his nephew, Robert de Montfort, he lost this castle. He witnessed the peace between KING HENRY II OF ENGLAND (RIN 761) and KING LOUIS VII OF FRANCE (RIN 1530) in1160. Waleran and Agnes had 6 sons and a daughter.

Schwennicke ES (iii, 700).

Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Appendix D to v.VII, p.717).

Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Leicester, pp. 530-533). Earl of Leicester and Steward of England and Normandy. He first appears in 1153, when he received a charter from HENRY [the future KING HENRY II (RIN 761)], son of THE EMPRESS, MATILDA, restoring to him the land then held by Robert's father . . . in England and Normandy and granting him the Dapifership of England and of Normandy. Unlike his predecessors, who had augmented their fortunes by adherence to the Crown, Robert took a rebellious course soon after he succeeded his father by espousing the cause of the "young king" Henry, son of KING HENRY II, when he revolted in 1173. THE KING at once confiscated Robert's English estates and attacked the town of Leicester, which was burnt. Leicester Castle, however held out. Robert took refuge inside his castle at Bretuil in Normandy. Robert fled just before KING HENRY captured and burnt the castle down. Robert crossed back to England and, joining forces with HUGH BIGOD, EARL OF NORFOLK (RIN 1961), plundered Norwich and took the castle of Hagenet. He then attempted to relieve the siege of his casle at Leicester, but was defeated by KING HENRY's forces commanded by Richard de Lucy. He and his countess were captured and sent to THE KING in Normandy who imprisoned them at Falaise. KING HENRY took the pair back to England with him in 1174. In the meantime the seneschal of Leicester Castle had been ravaging the countryside. KING HENRY extorted from Robert the surrender of his strongholds at Leicester, Mount Sorrel, and Groby. Robert and his countess were again taken back to Normandy, but the peace treaty between THE KING and his rebellious sons stipulated Robert's release. HENRY, however, demolished Leicester Castle. The rebellion having been crushed, Robert was no longer a menace THE KING restored to him all his castles except Mount Sorrel. From 1177, when he crossed back to Normandy, until 1183, we hear nothing of Robert except that he went on a pilgrimage in 1179. Once more under suspicion, he was imprisoned in 1183 along with his brother-in-law, ROBERT, EARL OF GLOUCESTER (RIN 1029). By 1186, he was again in favor and carried one of the swords of state at the coronation of King Richard. In 1189 he went on crusade and died on the return journey in 1190 at Durazzo.
