J. Horace Round in V.2 of "Peerage and Pedigree", 1970 reprint of the 1910 work, p.36, states that LIULF and ADAM were brothers, living during the reigns of Kings STEPHEN and HENRY II, and that LIULF's name proves that they were of English (i.e. Saxon as opposed to Norman) descent. On p. 30, Round explains that a deed from the period makes it reasonable to assume that their father divided his lands between the two brothers. The widley held belief that the identity of the father was an Adam de Audley was termed "a complete myth" by genealogist General George Wrottesley and Round concurred. On pages 18-25 Round explores the widley held theory that the mythical Adam de Audley was descended from a daughter of ALFRED THE GREAT through the Earls of Mercia, and utterly destroys it. The holder of the Audley/Stanley lands before the division appeard to have been a man named Gamel, but there is nothing to indicate he was the father of the brothers. The pipe roll of 1130 shows a Gamel to have been recently slain by "Aldredeselga", but Round notes that Gamel was a very common name and that there is no reason to believe that the pipe roll reference even refers to the same Gamel who held these lands. Also, the actual name , "Aldredeselga", has been interpreted as refering to LIULF DE AUDLEY, but such intrepretation is almost certainly incorrect.
Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Stanley, p.245) remarks that "The Audleys and the Stanleys had clearly been settled in their lands for some time before the charter, because they took their names from their holdings; and since they bore different names, it is quite likely that the father of LIULF and ADAM had no territorial surname.

J. Horace Round in V.2 of "Peerage and Pedigree", 1970 reprint of the 1910 work, pages 30-36, confirms his family relationships as I show them here.
Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" (AUDLEY. p.377) says he was the son of LIULF, who was the son of LIULF.

J. Horace Round in V.2 of "Peerage and Pedigree", 1970 reprint of the 1910 work, pages 26-27, ridicules "Burke's Peerage" for it's assertation that Adam's wife was the daughter of a Norman noble named Henry Stanley of Stonely and demonstrates that no such individual ever existed.

"Todd A. Farmerie"posted to soc.genealogy.medieval on 7 Feb 1997 (in part): Subject: Re: 1st post...this is interesting! "Well, such stories are the common fare of medieval genealogy. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them are entirely unfounded. Round traces the development of such a legend in the Audley family, where someone named Liulf (a classical English name) living a century or more after King William was the earliest person some "genealogist" could trace to. Because of the cultural desire of the family to be descended from one of the Conqueror's companions, this man was thrown back in time and turned into a Norman knight accompanying William to England. Then, it would seem, as it became the hip thing to have an ancestor in England BEFORE the Conquest, a later "genealogist" invented an English nobleman Henry (a name of german origin common among the French and post-conquest Norman nobility) to be father-in-law of Liulf. (I put genealogist in quotes, because the medieval "genealogist" would be shocked by his modern counterpart. They were more interested in a good story than whether or not it it was true. Unfortunately, there is no term for the genealogical alchemist.)"
