From a posting to GEN-MEDIEVAL on 26 Apr 1999 by Gilbert Baumgartner citing Maurice Houy's book, "Les Courtenay travers l'histoire", comes the following: He succeeded his father-in-law as Emporer of Constantinople in 1217. After having been crowned at Rome by the Pope, he disappeared with his army in the Albany mountains. His widow, his sons Robert and Baudoin, then his grandson Philipp, succeeded to him on the throne of Constantinople. But his empire, threatened on all sides, was reduced to only the town of Constantinople and collapsed definitively in 1261.
