Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (133:26).

Quoting from Christopher Cope's, "The Lost Kingdom of Burgundy" : "Humbert III, who reigned from 1149 to 1189, . . . was a man of irresolute spirit who was disconsolate at being born a prince and preferred the seclusion of a monestery. He only renounced his chosen state of celibacy so as to give his land an heir . . . " Two wives produced only a daughter. "Humbert gave up and became a Carthusian monk . . . As the ancient chronicle narrates, the barons, knights, and people of Savoy went to the abbot to beg him to restore their count to them, but his marriage . . . again only produced a daughter; Humbert was about to withdraw to the abbey of Aulps when he was prevailed on to marry yet again, and his fourth wife gave him an heir who fortunately had the kingly qualities which Humbert lacked." Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . ." (133:36), however, has the third wife, BEATRIX OF MACON as THOMAS' mother. Europaische Stammtafeln ii, 190 confirms BEATRIX.

Regarding the mother of WILLIAM DE LONGESPEE:

Weis' "Ancestral Roots" (30:26), calls him the natural son of HENRY II by an unknown mistress (perhaps Alix de Porhoet).

Rosamond Clifford and Annabel Balliol have been put forth as his mother by various scholars.

"Vickie (Elam) White" <102657.1616@COMPUSERVE.COM> posted to soc.genealogy.medieval on 7 Feb 1997 (in part): Subject: Re: Ridlesford - Longespee (was NESTA of Wales) "I dont' know about the Ridelsford line, but Rosamonde CLIFFORD was not the mother of William Longespee. Current thinking is that his mother was IDA (RIN 1968), who later married ROGER BIGOD, 2d Earl of Norfolk. Source: Gary Boyd Roberts' _Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States_ (1993). Evidently the source used by Roberts was a charter of William Longespee published in the _Cartulary of Bradenstoke Priory_ ed. by Vera C. M.London (Publications of the Wiltshire Record Society, Vol. 35, 1979) which explicitly named a "Countess Ida" as his mother. And William did name a daughter Ida. Also, there is evidently an article on her in The Genealogist Volume 3 (1982) pp. 265 - 266, which I have not seen. I don't know if this was used as a source for Roberts' position. I was told in February 1996 that there was a forthcoming article by Douglas Richardson that would fully document this identification. Does anyone know if this article has been published yet?"

"Charles Evans, in The Genealogist iii:265-6, cited a couple of charters in which William Longespee names his mother as a Countess Ida. He then suggested that she may have been Ida of Flanders, Countess of Boulogne (RIN 8563) , daughter of Matthew of Alsace (165-26) and of Maud, daughter of King Stephen." --- Todd A.
