Guy Abel
Guy, third child of five grew up in the rough leafy suburb
of Wash Common, South Newbury. He started playing football
in the back streets using tied together rags as a ball.
Life was dangerous but he managed to keep clear of the
common routes taken by many young lads his age such as
drugs, drive byes and prostitution. Guy spent most of his
day selling chewing gum to the passing motorist in the
traffic to help his parents which also meant in non-rush
hour periods he dedicated a lot of time to the game, but
then in 94 everything would be different.
The building of the controversial bypass changed Guy's life
forever, in losing his customer base he commenced on an
education and four years later came to Exeter. Recruited by
pickles in his third year by fellow newbury homey,
Nathaniel he slowly discovered his old touch and worked
hard to develop his old pace and stamina that had been worn
away through the years. He is an apt player who can play up
front or in midfield but prefers to link up on the right
flank with right back, 'Stan'. So how does the man himself
feel about playing for the pickles, well in a resent
interview he said "pickles have given me the opportunity to
play the game I loved as a child, in the madness of
university life it has brought a certain amount of clarity
to me and most of all it has reminded me of the most
important thing of all...never forget your roots". Never
forget your roots, well I think that says it all.
