A memo about volunteering at the Olympics went around the office and I jumped at the chance to do it. I applied to the Sports Information Department and I got word about working the Centenial Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. I was put in the Sport Information Center inside the Olympic Villiage.
My Olympic volunteer experience was more about having fun than work. The work was remedial, we didn't even work with any media. Sports Info for them was just that information given to the coaches and the envoys to their countries. We were taking orders for box lunches, answering phone calls, checking coaches in. There were a hand full of us that worked at the sports information departments at school, and we were dissapointed that we didn't get to work with the media, but we made the best of it. What made it worse, is that, non-experienced older volunteers were given the "supervisor" position, just because they had age seniority. While the student assistants did all the peon jobs. However, we were in the Olympic Villiage and we could use the facilities given to the athletes, such as Q-Zar, pool, free concerts, etc.

These are some friends from SIC at the Hootie and the Blowfish concert. Bottom L-R: Deberah Drucker (Maryland), Jennifer Brophy (Iowa), Me (Auburn). Top L-R: Cecil Bleiker (Texas A&M), Kevin Fletcher (Muzzu), JJ Hurley (Arkansas)
Cecil Bleiker took me to see the first day at the first event of Athletics. This was the day of the bombing, a week befor the Games were over. I left for Birmingham that afternoon and heard of the tragedy that night.
Overall, I'm glad I went, but I wished the Olympic commitee would have put more competent people in positions similiar to what they do in real life.
