Here by popular demand ...and
under considerable pressure from certain parties, is the Greyland
version
of "The Hero" ....well part
one anyway!
written by Paul Kuster Directed by Gary Farmer Michael Greyeyes as Frank Peter Kelly Gaudreault as Charlie Monique Mojica as the Clanmother
It opens with a shot of the Toronto skyline and then pans to a poster on a bus shelter which advertises an exhibition of "Our First Nations past". The scene then changes to a harassed, pony tailed PKG, in an office. The photocopier is making all sorts of weird noises and, being the expert repairman he obviously is, he gives it a swift kick andutters a few expletives! Then, whilst in the machine's innards he hears a strange voice calling, ephemerally ...."Cha-a-arlie." he looks up butthen realizes it was his work mates leaving ....calling, "'Night, Charlie." At this point the bane of his existence says, "Charlie can you help me?" You can tell by his reaction it's the last person he wants to hear ....a beautiful blonde ...and of course it is quitting time.....and ....she wants him to do some more work. "It's just a few things to be sorted and filed" she says flirtatiously, then hands him a huge stack of papers.

| Meanwhile MG is outside on the street (hair blowing
in the wind, as usual, wearing a
"Columbus was lost T-shirt") handing out leaflets. ...."Take one, ma'am, help us out. It ain't right what they're doing." He looks all long limbed and athletic. At this point PKG strolls over ...wearing a suit and tie. MG, "What kept you?" PKG, "Linda again."
| MG, "Oh heck, again." Instant understanding!
PG, "We're out of milk." MG ignores him and is still handing out pamphlets. PKG, louder, "We're out of milk!" PKG, even louder, "I HAD TO EAT DRY CEREAL THIS MORNING!" MG merely hands him a leaflet. PKG, "Oh? Who're we saving today?" he says in a light but sarcastic tone and reads the leaflet which says "Say No" and has a circle and arrow through an advert for the very exhibit shown on the bus shelter... PKGcrumples it and they both walk away together. |
MG, "Where, do you think they got all that stuff?" PKG, "Um, they stole it, Frank?" Then, "Everybody knows that!" MG, "Sure, make a joke of it." PKG looks a little chagrined but before he can say anything MG chimes in with, "We're outta
ketchup, too."
| PKG, replies with, "Rent's due on Monday."
MG, "No problem." PKG, "You can't even afford milk!" MG, "Like I said, no problem." Then Charlie hears his name being called again ...it's a female voice ...and out of the corner of his eye he sees a woman looking at him, she's seated at the bus shelter ....and she looks remarkably like the old photograph of an the woman in the poster. MG, still continuing to talk, "If you were a real Indian ....." PKG, "Oh please, not that real Indian stuff again." MG, ".....you would want to share your generosity..." MG walks away. |
PKG "Yes, well, being a real Indian doesn't pay the bills!" he says to MG's back. Then , contritely, "Hang on." MG slowly turns around, pouting the whole time I might add. PKG, "OK, I'll buy the milk." MG gives a shrug and a very small, still not mollified
smile, then coyly,
| "How about making dinner, too?"
PKG just laughs and shakes his head. MG, "How about a big, fat, juicy steak?" PKG jocularly, "How about fresh macaroni, right out of the box?" MG, with a big smile, "Make it steak and macaroni!' PKG, "Make it macaroni and ketchup." MG does not approve, "....you would make sure your relations had steak to eat!" PKG, "We're not related!"
| MG, "My mother and your mother were best friends!"
PKG, "So?" MG, "So, that's close enough!" PKG just shakes his head and wanders away speechless. MG calls after him, "You were just kidding about having macaroni, right? 'Cos we've had macaroni every night this week!"
| PKG smiles engagingly back at him and spots the
mysterious woman again, smiling at
him. |
Who is the smiling woman? What does she want with Charlie? Will they have macaroni again for supper ....and are Charlie and Frank gay? I have to admit I wondered!!! to be continued... Marnie
