Buffalo Tracks transcript Part I

On March 9th 2001 Michael Greyeyes was a guest on the APTN chat show "Buffalo Tracks" . What follows is Marnie's take on that show.....

Ok ...here I go ...and remember all errors and mistakes are mine ...and I may have misheard a few things so don't hold it against me, *g*!

As usual Evan was suave and debonair ...though he was wearing a shirt of the eye-bleeding variety ...I was quite stunned by it! Very green and garish ....but it if anyone has the personality to carry it off he does. It was ...sort of insane, almost Hawaiian (but not) type of thing. He started his opening address ...and I shall jump immediately to the relevant parts.....

.
.
.
Evan: Tonight our featured guest is an actor, and a dancer and a choreographer - the wonderful, the illustrious Michael Greyeyes. *enthusiastic applause*

Then just before MG came on.

E: Our featured guest tonight was the first Aboriginal man to study at the National Ballet School.
He has performed in a number of show-stopping roles such as Gooch in "Dance Me Outside" and the lead role in "Crazy Horse". He was amazing. He will be seen early next year in the movie "Skipped Parts" with Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Since we launched our website we have been bombarded with requests asking for our next guest. You know we are here to please...so here he is, "Mr. Babe-a-roni" himself, Michael Greyeyes!!"

MG walks out ...towering over Evan ...wearing a black and white checked shirt, (was a little worried that it would run interference on the TV ...but fortunately the pattern was wide enough) dark trousers, shoes and socks....his hair tied back with a fairly thick, pale ...sorta silvery, thingmy...OK, I'm not so hot describing accessories, teehee. He shakes Evan's hand ...kisses Santee (!) and takes a seat.

MG:*smiling* "Thankyou, ...thankyou very much."
E:*laughing ...but pouting, too* "You know....it is SO funny that half of the fan mail for MY show ...is for you!!! - and you've never been on my show!!"
MG: nodding and smiling "...I have dedicated fans..."
E: I'll say....I even get people writing to me, "Dear Evan, I saw you in "Smoke Signals" ....do you know Michael Greyeyes?"
*MG laughs and holds the bridge of his nose. Then, with his head tilted and a genuine look on his face*
MG: "You know what, it's been really wonderful ...because, as you know, in the business, it is sometimes hit or miss. A lot of times it's miss -and it's really great to get an e-mail or a letter from someone-"I saw you in this movie and I thought you were great. Keep up the good work" So, it really helps."
E: (now hold on to your hat Sonja) I even got a letter from a  woman in SA, which I forwarded to you....
MG: *nodding and pointing in affirmation* "Yes, ...yes."
E: *continuing*  ...saying exactly that ...he's amazing - I saw him in this, I saw him in that."
MG: "...they're fantastic ...they're fantastic."
E: So, your fans want to know more about what you are doing ...what ARE you doing?'
MG: "Early next year, as you mentioned, I'm going to be appearing in a film called "Skipped Parts". It was written by Tim Sandler, a novelist ...and was adapted from his novel of the same name. It stars JJL, Drew Barrymore is in the film, Brad Renfro ...and me!!"
E: "Wow...those are some big names, tell me about your role."
MG: "I play Jennifer's boyfriend...named Hank...and he's a rodeo rider. He falls in love with her. She starts going out with him because she knows it will infuriate her father ...but then she ends up falling in love with him."
E:" How is she to work with?"
MG: "She's amazing..."
E: "...she's a good actor...?"
MG: "Really good...amazing...every day. I learned a lot actually...and she's..."
E: *interjecting*( he KNOWS what we want to know, *g*) "Any love scenes?"
MG:" Yes....yes, *with a quirky grin*- There's going to be the famous bath tub scene, I think ,....*breaks into a broad laugh*
E:  Oh re-e-a-ally? *Santee is laughing in the background, MG turns to share a smile with her*
MG: You'll have to see it to believe it, I think ....yeah.... *he's teasing a little*
E: "To believe it ? ...Why?"
MG: *teasing some more "Well, it's me ....and Jennifer....*he pauses*...and a moose head ...in a bath tub...!"
E: "I'm gonna rush out to see that ...!"
MG: ...and that's all I'm going to say..."*holding up his hands with finality ...a huge grin breaking across his face again.
Everyone is enjoying the humour and Evan laughingly smacks the armrest of the chair a few times.*
MG: It was a great role- a lot of fun to do. I worked with a great director Tamera Davis ...and I think the studio that's releasing the film are excited about it.
E: Good I'm looking forward to it........

Trans part II

OK, ok ....where was I   .....

.
.
.
E: Good I'm looking forward to it........

E: *changing the subject* "National Ballet School ...you were a "bunhead" for a long time...."
MG: "A long time...a long time. I think about it a lot because it provided me with so many opportunities. As Santee knows ...it's a pretty tough place to go to school."
E:" Completely different from how you grew up, right?"
MG:" Yeah, I grew up in Saskatoon, y'know...and I was hockey player ...and I think that's what I wanted to be..... You don't really know what you want to be when you are 9 or 10 and I was probably gonna play in the NHL"
E: "....and you ended doing ballet..."
MG: *agreeing* "...and then I got hijacked....."
E: "How long did you dance for?"
MG:"15 years..."
E:* surprised* "Holy cow!"
Santee interjects...
S: "Did we ever dance together, I'm trying to think ...did we ever do a 'pas de deux'"
MG:*turns to her*"No, no..."*regretfully* "I remember a photo shoot with you. They had a bunch of the students in a  room together...we were in Studio B and they were taking photo of us ...and I remember meeting you then and I thought ....Cool!!"*nodding*
S: *teasing*" Of course, ...he's much older than me *(meaning MG)...she leans and touches
him on the shoulder pacifyingly*
E: "Oh yes, lots older..."
MG:* nodding sagely* " Quite a bit ...quite a bit..."* then he smiles at her*
Santee lets loose a peal of laughter.
S:* mollifyingly *" No not a lot ...but we went to school together..."
MG: "Yeah, ...but seniors and juniors didn't mix..."
S: "...and we didn't speak to each other because ...."
MG: *finishes humorously * ".....'cos that was the rule!!"
E: "...and there has never been an Aboriginal man at that school...?"
MG:" No, I think I was the first boy to go that school.."
E:" How were you different from the other boys?"
MG:"You know what, and I make a joke about it, but being Native at that school didn't matter at all. My joke is that all the teachers hated us EQUALLY!!"
There is much laughter. Evan is cracking up ...
MG: *grinning* "That's not totally true....It's a fantastic school and we were up against a standard that had nothing to do with race ...it had to do with ability ...and body type."
.......

to be continued

Well gals ...me wrist is giving out ...I have this little blister forming on the heel of my hand ...and you wouldn't ...you really wouldn't want me to continue in these circumstances, would you?
Also, I believe "bunhead" is the vernacular for a FEMALE ballet dancer ...but that's Evan for you, teehee!!

Wrist giving out?? What IS this??!! Back to work with you! I don't care if your fingers are  rotting off.......FINISH THE TRANSCRIPT!!!

  Sonja
  *grin*

*Marnie, as ordered, fumbles her bandaged, bloodied stubs across the keyboard...."Now where was I...."*

.
.
.
MG: *grinning* "That's not totally true....It's a fantastic school and we were up against a standard that had nothing to do with race ...it had to do with ability ...and body type."

E: "At some point you made the switch from dancing to acting. Was it a  natural progression for you?"
MG: "You know, I think it was, actually, because I was dancing in New York City. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I fractured my leg. I injured it dancing and so I had to take a year and a half off to heal it and I started to choreograph and I met some actors and the way they talked about their work, the way they talked about creating a character ...it was very similar to the way that the guy I was working with in NY was asking us to approach our dancing. So I said, you know, it's the same thing.
E: 'We have an early clip of you from "Dance Me Outside"
They then showed the clip of "Gooch" in the bar ...when he faces off against "Silas".
The studio erupts in applause and cheers when it is over.
MG: " You know what's really funny about that ...."
E: "What?"
MG:" I play a lot of characters similar to that and similar to "Gooch", very much unlike me. You know, when I did "Smoke Signals" with you I heard from people..."That was great...Michael took on such a different character to play Junior," ..and I laughed and all my friends laughed ...they went like ..."That's the real Michael...this other guy we see...we don't know who he is!"
Santee: "When I saw that I almost died laughing 'cos I know you and then I saw the character and it was so funny ...it was so good."
MG: "Some of my friends just can't buy it yet ....maybe they will one day.
E:"You did a documentary with the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkeson, the Governor General of Canada. (That's the Queen's representative here in Canada) ...before she was GG."
MG:"Yes, she had a program on CBC "Adrienne Clarkeson Presents". Independent producers would create projects about people and she would introduce them as part of her program. A director named Alan Burke at the CBC collaborated with me on a program called "He Who Dreams: Michael Greyeyes on the PowWow Trail" and it followed me as I started researching my cultural traditions. Coming from a western, classical ballet tradition I knew very little ...and so I went back. One of the best things about that documentary was that the people I was learning from were the most interesting people. It wasn't about me ...it became about them and what they were teaching."
E: "...and where can we see this?"
MG" Here, it's being broadcast on APTN."
E: *pleasantly surprised*" Oh good! ....Oh well, can't wait to see that. *then* Well, it's wonderful to catch up with you and hear more about your work. I hear you are going to take your shirt off to help our ratings...."
* There is raucous audience laughter, MG is laughing so hard his eyes have disappeared into crinkles *
E: "I'll take mine off if you'll take yours off!!"
There is more laughter and an almost indistinguishable utterance from MG ...at first I thought it was "Shall we? " (yes please) then I thought it was "Santee?" But what I actually think it was ...and this because it was said in a pleading  way ...and because during the show the camera had shown various audience members ...one of which looked like MG's Mom (though the shot was from above so I may be wrong) ...but as, just after Evan requested the shirt removal, MG's eyes scanned the audience ...and then we hear his rather plaintive ...."Mommeee?!!!"
Mind you everyone was laughing so hard it was difficult to tell..... heck,  I was laughing ....so you'll just have to guess too!
E: *continuing his wrap up* "...and we're going to be working together"
MG:"I hope so."
E: 'We were talking about a project where we played a couple of weird misfit brothers"

....and that was it...though after the break Evan did say to Santee

"Well, have you recovered, caught your breath yet after our visit with Michael Greyeyes?"
S* hand on breast, gasping* "Oh, he's so beautiful ...."
E"Heart be still ....isn't he cute?"
S:' Yeah and he's such a nice person ...that's the killer!"

.
.
.

We'd have to agree with her wouldn't we gals?
