Some general information...

The scientific name of the Bottlenose Dolphin is Tursiops truncatus, but on this page we'll just call it Bottlenose dolphin. This dolphin is found between Cape Cod and the Gulf of Mexico, but mostly you find it in the saltier water of the lower Chesapeake Bay. The most of the dolphins ever seen together in that bay is one hundred. Mostly you see 10 to 15 dolphins if you look well.

The Bottlenose dolphin belongs to the Cetacea, where all whales belong to. Unlike some other Cetacea, the Bottlenose dolphin has teeth. They are in the family called Delphinidae.

If you go to a zoo and watch the dolphins, you can almost be sure you're watching a Botllenose dolphin. They are most used in zoos. You can see they can be 12 feet long and weigh 1,400 pounds, but mostly they weigh 300 to 400 pounds. The food of the Bottlenose dolphin is mostly fish, like catfish, menhaden, crabs, eels, mullet, shrimp and squid, 12 to 15 pounds a day.
