Behaviour

Dolphins are the best mammal swimmers. Research showed that, when they just swim around a bit, they swim at a speed of 3 to 7 miles per hour, but if they need to be fast, they are extremely fast, for a short period. They can reach speeds of 22 miles per hour.

Dolphins are very nice to each other. Like people (are supposed to) do, they help each other. If a weaker or old older dolphin can't reach a\the surface of the water, the stronger ones help them. Some people could take an example of that.

The groups dolphins swim in are called pods. Mostly a pod exists of 7 dolphins. They are social to each other and other animals. That's a very special thing in the animal kingdom. Just like humans, they recognize individuals, even after longer periods. Also, the connection between mother and child and other dolphins are long lasting, like humans.

Many people think that dolphins can communicate with each other. Some people even say they have a certain language. They create sounds in a specific order, so that another dolphin can understand it. But the dolphin don't only use their ears for hearing, but also for seeing. If some sounds sound different, like echoing, they know there's something in their way. You can compare this with bats.

The bottlenose dolphins aren't much endangered. Only one time there was a big plague. In 1987 and 1988 750 Atlanticc Bottlenose Dolphins were found off the East coast of the U.S.A. This was because of a toxic algae in the water.. The menhaden consumed those algae and since the dolphins eat menhaden, they also ate the toxic algae. Fifty to sixty percent died during this period.
