Mother Teresa : Angel of Mercy
(August 27, 1910 - September 5, 1997)

Whatsoever you do
When I was hungry, you gave me to eat; When I was thirsty you gave me to drink
Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to Me.
Come and enter the house of My Father.
When I was a stranger, you opened your doors; When I was naked, you gave me clothes
When I was tired, you gave me peace; When I was frightened, you calmed me down
When I was small, you thought me to read; When I was lonely, you gave me your love
I was in prison, you visited me; I was sick and you took care of me
In a strange country, you gave me a home
When I had no job, you found me one; When I was wounded, you took care of it
Looking for friendship, you gave me your hand
Whether I was black, or white or yellow; mocked at or insulted, you carried my cross
When I was old, you smiled at me; When I couldn't find peace, you brought it to me.
You saw me: full of spit and blood; dirty with sweat, still you said you knew me.
You were on my side in times of despise; In the hour of joy, we were together.
Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to Me.
Come and enter the house of My Father.

My Tribute to Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa touched the world with her compassion, her zeal, her love for life. I'm not sure there will be  many to come after her that possess her lifelong love for all people.  She will be sorely missed by all, especially those she helped and those her organization will help in the future, and her fellow Roman Catholic brethren.
Goodbye, Mother !!!!

Life of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on august 26, 1910 in Skopje (Macedonia), former Yugoslavia to Albanian parents.   She took the name Theresa, for Therese of Lisieux ,when she received her calling to become a nun.  She went to India in 1928, and taught at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta, taking her final vows in 1937.   In 1948 she left the convent to work alone among the poor people in the slums.  After undergoing medical training in Paris, she opened her first school for destitute children in Calcutta.  She was gradually joined by other nuns, and her House for the Dying was opened in 1952.
Her sisterhood, the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, was formed in 1950,  and in 1957 she started work with lepers and in many disaster areas of the world.  The Missionary of Charity has now over 4000 brothers and sisters.  She was awarded the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Ill-health has prevented the Mother from working harder even today, but the several Missionaries she began continue to serve all those people who need the love, care and attention.  She died in 1997, having lived an exemplary life devoted to God and to humanity and leaving a void in the lives of many people.

Mother's Work

Nirmal Hriday
One of the first foundations of Mother Teresa is the Home for the Dying in Calcutta opened in  1952.  Ever since thousands of men, women and children (now more than 40,000) were taken from the street in Calcutta and transported to the home. They are washed, freshly dressed and put into bed with the proper medical care.  Half of them who died, have died in a kind surrounding. In their last hours they know the human and divine love, they can sense that they also are the children of God. For those who didn't die the sisters tried to find a job or they were sent to homes where they could live happily for some more years in homely surrounding.
All over India and the world the Missionaries of Charity have homes for the dying and the very sick people, who have nobody else who care, or who can't pay for any medical help. The sisters have ambulances, doctors, nurses, etc. Many friends and volunteers also give a helping hand.

Shishu Bavan
Another early foundation was "Shishu Bhavan", the Home for the babies.  In India now there are over forty houses for children. But not only here: but all over the world the sisters have childrens' homes.  All the unwanted babies of the society are taken in to the sisters care and raised with lots of love and care.  Some have studied and got married, have an important social role and have  themselves become messengers of love, doing the good work all over.

Shanti Nagar
India has a quite great number of lepers.  In the traditional mentality this disease is a punishment sent to someone by God and thus one has to accept and suffer the disease without complaint. The position of a leper is far from enviable in India. They live and die like animals.  Mother Teresa tried explained that this was a disease, that in many cases could be cured and not a punishment, but she was met with wall of cold neglection. But she started to make small villages where the lepers could live and work in peace and be cared for, but she needed to find a proper place.
The Sister had the idea to collect money for the lepers among the millions of inhabitants of the city of Calcutta. "Touch the leper with your kindness".  It was a great success and with the money, added to other donations, Shanti Nagar was created: "The city of peace", where sick and healed lepers are cared for, learn a job, find work.

Soup kitchen
In many big cities, where the homeless and the poor who have no place to go or stay and certainly have no one who cares, the sisters have soup kitchen every day. So this men and women can have a warm meal , a warm place to stay and good food.  Many times they become like a small family where the care for each other grows.  The sisters also prepare feasts on major festivals for such people along with the help of many volunteers.

Growth of The Sisters of Charity
The sisters are now active all over India as well as in many other countries in the world: from Venezuela to Jordan, from Italy to Tanzania, from the United States to Russia. More and more bishops were asking for the sisters help and the number of vocations was increasing, especially in India. After deep consideration, prayer and discussion, Mother accepted the expansion.  She opened a house for alcoholics, drug addicts, homeless and destitutes in Rome. The pope has requested to open a house for mothers with unwanted pregnancies. For the vocations from Europe and America, she opened a second noviciate in Rome. In the spirit of the second vatican council she accepted in India non-christian novices, under the condition that they would accept totally the life and engagement of the Missionaries of Charity.  As said, with the changing in the communist countries, she opened houses there, among which Russia, Poland, Croatia, etc. The apostolate there is not mostly a material, but essentially a moral need.

Prisons
Rehabilitation of the prisoners in India. More than 40,000 prisoners are being served and have been rehabilated by the Sisters of Charity.
