Bolung's Place

At the entrance to the second gorge (Katherie Gorge) lives Bolung the Rainbow Serpent, in the deepest water of the gorge system. Jayown people avoid this deep pool so that Bolung is not disturbed. The scale of Katherine Gorge is hard to envisage from photographs from the river because it is so big - only aerial views do it justice.

In the walls of the Gorge, there is a cave with a small waterfall. Here the tourists in canoes feed the northern snapping turtles.
