Fact number one: there are only 4 basic types of spirits. Period. From these 4 general types comes all spiritual encounters; whether they are hauntings, "divine revelation", religious in nature, channeling, spirit writing, spirit friends, etc., etc. You get the picture- everything.
These 4 types of spirits are: God, Human, Angelic, and Demonic. I have found no precedent for "actual" animal spirits, though if I do, I will update my website.
Determining what kind of spirit you are dealing with can be tricky, but is not too hard when you have all the facts. When you are dealing with God, if you have a relationship with him, you will know. God, well- He acts like God. God will not ever haunt you. The same for angelic beings. Angels are the spiritual servants of God, His messengers, if you will. While I have known people to come in contact with angels, some in their homes, you will not be haunted by angels either. It is not in the nature of God or his servants to cause fear is such a silly way as hauntings.
That leaves human and demonic spirits. How will you know if the spirit in your house is human or demonic in nature? That is where we come in.
There are certain behaviors which are a clear indication of demonic activity, such as bleeding crucifixes, violent reactions to the talk of God or Jesus, and of course, Possession.
But often times it is not as obvious to the layman. I have often times discovered that what was portraying itself as a deceased family member, or sometimes more that one "human" is in fact, a demon.
