Getting To Know You Sulu

This is a TOS/ST:TMP sort of Sulu -- he just sounded kinda sweet and young to me...

Nyota Uhura, coming across this questionairre in her in box, decided to pass it on to her favourite helmsman. Here's his reply.

NAME: Hikaru Jun Sulu... though I rarely use the Jun.

It's one of those traditional Japanese names, means "First Born Son." Kinda pretentious, huh?

SEX: Male

HOME: Well, I was born in San Fransisco, but I left my heart on the USS Enterprise.

HEIGHT: 5' 8"... or so. Okay, 5'6"

EYES: Brownish black.

HAIR: Black. I'm Japanese, for god's sake!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW? I love reruns of that old british show, "Robin Hood." Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen... huh? Oh, sorry. He was really good with a sword, that guy. It's either that one, or 'Lost In Space." Man, they could'a used a good helmsman.

WHAT'S ON YOUR MOUSE PAD? My mouse, some tea stains and usually a toothpick. Okay, okay, it's a fractal representation of one of my trickiest evasive manouevers, the one I used to outwit Khan that time.

Man, I'm good... No, that wasn't the Captain's idea!

FAVOURITE MAGAZINE: Blade & Point, Samurai Weekly.

I also get Popular Physics, but that's kinda slow.

FAVOURITE SMELL: Mmmmmm that's tough. Fresh sweat.

WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD: When you think you're gonna get under his guard, and the buzzer goes, and you look down and his epee' is against your chest...

BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD: When the Captain let's me do manual evasive manouvers, and I outwit the Klingons! Man! Can't beat it. Who says a machine can run a starship better than a good helmsman!

THINGS TO DO ON WEEKENDS: Spar, have a drink with Nyota and Pavel, play StarShip in the arcade...

FAVOURITE SOUNDTRACK:... Lemme think about that one.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU THOUGHT OF WHEN YOU WOKE UP THIS MORNING? None of your business.

DO YOU GET MOTION SICKNESS? Are you nuts? I'm the HELMSMAN!

ROLLER COASTERS - DEADLY OR EXCITING? Deadly dull, after you've flown with me. Roller coasters are kid's play.

PEN OR PENCIL? What for? For writing? I never have anything to write, except haiku, and I like to that with a traditional brush, ink block and well. I get this really nice rice paper from San Fransisco when we're back there. Would you like to hear one of my haiku? "Early morning rain, falling on the Golden Gate. Life is beautiful" My opa loved that one.

HOW MANY RINGS BEFORE YOU ANSWER THE PHONE? Three. No rush, I figure.

FAVOURITE FOODS? Mmmmmm.... well, the usual japanese stuff. I was raised on it, after all. Tempura.

Suimono. Rice. Sushi, though after that incident with the fugu I stick to the less esoteric types. All those dead guys, and from eating! What a stupid way to die! Sometimes I like a nice, rare steak... though usually I don't think of it unless I see someone else eating one. That's the Captain's favourite, you know.

DO YOU GET ALONG WITH YOUR PARENTS? Dead. Honoured, but dead.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN CONVICTED OF A CRIME? You think they'd let a criminal fly the Enterprise? I've been accused, sure, but never convicted. The Captain would never allow that, he needs me too badly.

CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA? Oh... either. I'm not into sweets, really.

CROUTON OR BACON BITS? Croutons! Crunch, crunch!

DO YOU LIKE TO DRIVE? Duh. I'm THE driver, the BEST, and I LOVE MY JOB.

DO YOU SLEEP WITH STUFFED ANIMALS? You son of a bitch, come here and ask me that!

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY KIND OF PET, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

With a middle name like Jun, I ought to be keeping Koi, huh? I don't want a pet, though. Takes up too much time. I have a bonsai tree, that's a kind of pet.

IF YOU COULD BE ANY TYPE OF ANIMAL, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

There is no animal that could fly the Enterprise. If I HAD to be an animal, I'd like to be a raven. They do all kinds of acrobatics, have you ever seen them?

THUNDERSTORMS, COOL OR SCARY? Yawn.

IF YOU COULD MEET ANYONE DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE? Oh, easy. Hireyoshi, the great Shogan who ruled all of Japan in the 16th century. He was cool, man!

Great swordsman, totally in control all the time. He even had a fleet of sailing ships, AND he wrote beautiful Haiku. They still have this great garden he designed in Kyoto.

FAVOURITE ALCOHOLIC DRINK: Sake, for formal occasions. Just a beer usually on the weekends.

WHAT IS YOUR ZODIAC SIGN? We japanese don't believe in that stuff, but I'm a Scorpio. Nyota says that's why I'm so sexy, but I don't see it. I think it's my sculptured muscles, from working out every day.

Fencing is hard work, and so is Karate-Jitsu. Did I mention I'm a black belt?

EAT THE STEMS OF BROCCOLI? Sliced thin and done as tempura, yeah.

GUYS - IF A GIRL ASKED FOR THE SHIRT OFF YOUR BACK, WOULD YOU GIVE IT TO HER? Sure... and hope she'd ask for the pants, too!

There is no better job than the one I have. I just wish the Captain would let me do manual manouevers more often! I can make this baby dance!

On this body? Well, perhaps the Japanese characters for power and swiftness. I guess, I wouldn't mind having that on my shoulder blade, on my right shoulder blade. Might look kinda cool.

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING: Oh, I'd love a traditional Japanese ceremony, in a garden. I'd wear a gold and green kimono, and she'd be all cute in red.

WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR ROOM? A model of the Enterprise, a poster of SanFransisco in infrared as viewed from orbit. A Miss Japan calendar. My swords and daggars. An antique poster for the movie "The Seven Samurai."

IS THE GLASS HALF EMPTY, OR HALF FULL? That's sound's like a koan, or an idea for a Haiku!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SNAPPLE? Green Tea flavour.

Though they make it a bit sweet.

DO YOU TYPE WITH YOUR FINGERS ON THE RIGHT KEYS? Of course. Who doesn't?

WHAT'S UNDER YOUR BED? Quarterstaff, my tabi, and some back issues of Samurai weekly.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR? I actually had a little Hyundai Supersport when I was a teenager. I know, I know, but a boy's first car is always a bit of a joke, isn't it?

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM CAR? After the Enterprise, all cars are a joke. Though I like Formula One racing, at least the road courses. I wouldn't mind trying that.

I don't get those oval track races, though. Turn left, go straight. Turn left, go straight. Where's the skill in that?

FAVOURITE SPORT TO WATCH: Oh, there's so many. I watch Fencing, of course, and the international Karate' tournaments. I record all the F1 races and watch them with Pavel when we get shoreleave on Earth.

SAY ONE NICE THING ABOUT THE PERSON WHO SENT THIS TO YOU: She thinks I'm sexy, even if I never manage to seduce her!
