Captain Christopher Pike (Played by Jeffrey Hunter)
Born in Mojave on Earth. He first took command of the Enterprise in 2250 and undertook two five year missions. Nearing the end of the second Five year mission Pike became disolusioned with the role of Commanding the Enterprise and being responsible for all her crew.
When the mission was complete he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
Jeffrey Hunter portrayed Pike in the 1st Pilot episode excellently.
But when the 2nd pilot was planned he was unavailable and William Shatner was chosen for the role.
