William Shatner
Born in Montreal, Canada on the 22nd of March 1931 William Shatner played parts in University productions.
In 1952 he graduated from the McGill University. Shatner began work at the National Repertory Theatre of Ottawa. He finally won roles in plays such as "The Merchant of Venice" and "Henry V," as well as the Most Promising Actor award.
After a period in New York in the play, 'Tamburlaine," Shatner signed a 7 year contract by 20th Century Fox. He got married to a Canadian actress, Gloria Rand. They spent their honeymoon in Edinburgh because William had a part in the Edinburgh Festival production of "Henry V."
On completion of his honeymoon, Shatner returned to New York where he guest starred on several series.
Next came his movie debut, "The Brothers Karamazov,".Shatner learned to ride a horse and rope. Not wanting to miss out on the Western craze that was seeping across Hollywood.
Shatner then landed a starring role in the 2 year Broadway run of "The Secret Life of Suzie Wong." This proceded "A Shot in the Dark" and then "L'Idiote," all on Broadway.
In 1961, Shatner got 2 film parts, "The Intruder" & "Judgment at Nuremberg."
Then he got the part of James T Kirk, One of the most famous SCI-FI characters of all time.
Star Trek being cancelled after only three years was accompanied by 2 other losses in Shatners life. His marriage broke up and his father died.
After the original series, or as it better known TOS ended in 1969, Shatner went on to star in the 1st 7 Star Trek feature films. He also made films such as "Sole Survivor," & the Sherlock Holmes classic, "The Hound of the Baskervilles."
During the filming of "The Andersonville Trial," Shatner met Marcy Lafferty, who later became his 2nd wife.
In 1974 Shatner along with the rest of the TOS cast, Shatner starring in 18 episodes of an animated version of Star Trek.
In 1979 "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was released and Shatner was back in command of the Enterprise as James T. Kirk. When "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" was finally shot, it was Shatner who sat in the director's chair.
In 1982, Shatner starred in the cop series, TJ Hooker which ran for 4 years. Succeeding Hooker, Shatner then went on to host to the series "Rescue 911".
In 1994, Universal made a TV series, TekWar based on the series of books written by Shatner and Ron Goulart. While Shatner did not star in the series, he did make guest appearances and directed various episodes.
He has also made several guest appearances on NBCs hit comedy 3rd Rock from the Sun. In December 2000, Shatner's latest film, "Miss Congeniality," was Premiered.
Shatner has also written several books, including "Star Trek Memories" & "Star Trek Movie Memories",
On the 9th of August 1999 Tragedy Shatner once again experienced a loss when his 3rd wife, Nerine, accidentally drowned in the swimming pool of their home.
Shatner has 3 daughters, Lizebeth, Lesley & Melanie and 1 son, Daniel.
During the days of the original Star Trek series, Shatner generated a lot of ill feeling toward him as he began demanding other cast members' lines and scenes be cut in favour of his own.
He also acted generally arrogantly like he was the boss. His impolite attitude has led to public accusations when Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) did so when he revealed without authorization in his autobiography about her romance with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. However, during the films of Star Trek V he was on his best behaviour as director and the cast had a surprisingly agreeable time working on the film.
He currently lives in Southern California (USA). And has a 360 acre horse farm in Kentucky.
