Ethan Phillips was born and raised in New York on Long Island. He grew up as the lone boy of six children. He was educated in New York, and attended Boston University where he graduated with a degree in English Literature. He went on to acquire a Master of Fine Arts degree at Cornell University.
Ethans vocation in acting began like so many others in the theatre, appearing in Broadway and off-Broadway productions such as "My Favourite Year" and "Measure for Measure".
Phillips was in new productions for Playwrights Horizons, the Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Hudson Guild Theatre and others, and has played leading roles for many of the major regional theatres around the country. (USA)
While he may have made his name on stage, Phillips is perhaps best known for his extensive TV work. Audiences will most likely remember him for his 5 seasons as Pete Downey, the governor's press aide on the hit TV sitcom "Benson" (co-starring with DS9's Rene Auberjonois). In addition, he had a recurring role in the drama "Werewolf", and has guest-starred on numerous shows including LA Law and NYPD Blue. Ethan has also appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation as a Ferengi Dr. Farek in an episode called "Menage A Troi."
But Phillips is no stranger to feature films. Any Star Trek fan will recognised him in human form as a holographic nightclub maitre d' in "Star Trek: First Contact".
He starred in "For Richer or Poorer," and appeared in the movie "Jeffrey". In addition, Ethan can be seen in the movies "The Shadow," "Wagons East," "Man Without a Face," "Green Card," "Bloodhounds of Broadway" "Glory" and "Lean On Me," among others.
Besides acting on stage, TV and movie projects, Ethan is also an author and playwright. His original play, "Penguin Blues," was published by the Samuel French company and has been produced more than 150 times throughout the U.S. and Canada.
In 1999, his "Star Trek Cookbook" With Neelix (His Star Trek Voyager character) on the cover-was published by Pocket Books. Ethan was only co-author of this book with William Birnes.
Ethan lives in LA with his wife Patricia. In his spare time he likes to rock climb and hike. He's also an amateur botanist and ornithologist.
