Cuban Propaganda Posters

"Be alert!" The poster refers to the invasion in Cuba of 1,300 exiles, trained and funded by the United States, in April 1961. They attempt to overthrow Castro's regime, but receive no support from the Cuban population and suffer a crushing defeat within a few days.

"May Day. All with Fidel on the Square of the Revolution" At the May Day meetings on the Square of the Revolution in Havana, Castro speeches for several hours on end. In these years, he seriously tries to inform the Cuban people, illustrates his argument with facts and figures and speaks openly about problems.

 Fourth anniversary of the revolution

"Let's do our job!" In 1961, Cuban schools close for several months. All students go to the countryside to teach the population reading and writing. Illiteracy is reduced from around thirty percent to virtually zero. Alphabetization serves political purposes too: illiterate people are unable to help building the new society. The exercise books use words and concepts from revolutionary practice, such as 'cooperation' and 'agrarian reform'.

 Seventh anniversary..
In the upper left corner a picture of Castro and his comrade in arms Camilo Cienfuegos during their triumphant entry into Havana, January 1959. The long hairs and beards from their time as guerrillas remain distinguishing features of the Cuban revolutionary leaders.

 Fidel !

 Che !

Day of the Heroic Guerrilla... In Bolivia, Che Guevara tries to get a revolutionary process going to 'liberate Latin America from American imperialism'. In practice, his group of rebel fighters remains very small, receives little support from the population and has no military success at all. As a symbol and source of inspiration however, Che's importance can hardly be overestimated. Posters like this one are spread worldwide and help making Che a universal icon of revolutionary romanticism.
