Not a bad issue at all, Steve. The Jeb Rivers story was a bit predictable but still entertaining. The Flying Fool "Shangrala" story was the best story in the book, and the artwork is be Simon & Kirby if I'm not mistaken. The Giant Panda story seems quaint now, since we've all seen enough images of Pandas to utterly undermind the idea of a Panda as a menace. The Pussy Katnip story was completely bizarre.

Take care,
Jon

Pretty much my feelings on the book too. However I would rate Jeb a little higher only because of the art. The art (and writing) on Flying Fool was Jack Kirby on a solo outing! This made the story extra special to me!

Steve,

I thoroughly enjoyed the Jeb Rivers story. True enough, the plot was certainly not "cutting edge" and the characterizations, though well-drawn, were pretty much caricatures--but the writing had a very good-natured feel to it and that beautiful art! Was that Reed Crandall?

I think the writer also succeeded in portraying the best of the 19th Century American ambience. That old Yankee, can-do, pioneer spirit was there in every page. And it was so refreshing (and rare, especially these days) to see such good sportsmanship displayed at the end of the tale. I guess I also liked the story because it reminded me of TV shows like Maverick and Yancy Derringer that I used to watch when I was a kid.

I haven't read the other stories yet, but I look forward to the "Flying Fool." I remember Jack Kirby once mentioned that strip in a recap of his career that appeared in a text feature he wrote for the DC comics he produced in the early 1970's. From the title of the strip I had the notion that it was a humor feature. Guess I was wrong. The splash page looks fascinating.

Glad you liked the first story! I hope the rest of the issue was up to par!
