Mission Statement: May 25, 2001

Hi everyone, I wanted to take the time in this special to tell you a little bit about why and how I do what I do here. The Golden Years started back in August, 1999 with the Action Comics cover gallery and grew from there. The library, which has unofficially become the main attraction here, wasn't even thought of until June of last year. My original goal with this section, was to provide you, the reader, with free access to complete Golden Age comics. This became harder to do as I began collecting more and more books. Eventually it became evident that I needed to have at least 1 regular publication like Pure Excitement Comics. Then All-Amazing Comics was born and from there grew All-Golden, Spotlight, and King-Sized.

I've always had fun doing these books but one thing has driven me since day 1. Preservation. These books aren't getting any younger, and I have a few that are super brittle. If they aren't preserved we may loose them forever. I've always applauded Bill Nolan and others like him for the work they've done. They have done an excellent job at bringing these almost forgotten heroes back from the brink of extinction and I commend them for all the hard work they have put into this. What goes into making a "book" like the one you're reading now? Well, read on!

Keep in mind that this is the way I do things. My methods may differ from others. Each month I start out with this "Profiles and Letters" page. I look through the books I own and what I've received from other sources (such as the ever-wonderfull Marble River!), and decide what I will feature in the next issue. Sometimes it takes me 5 or 10 minutes to decide on the right combination of stories. After this is finished I'll update the side bar to reflect the current issue's features as well as research the profiles and compile my letters. This can take an hour or more at times.

After the profiles page, I'll begin scanning the stories and editing the images which can take 4 or more hours depending on the size and number of the stories. I have to scan, whiten, shrink to 532 pixels wide, and darken with two different photo programs and a "JPEG Smart Saver" which brings the file size down to 140 kb. From there I usually design the cover and piece it together which is about 2 more hours. This is easily my favorite part of the process.

By this time I've usually worked 3 or 4 days, most of the time starting on Sunday or Monday night, with Friday as my deadline. I then work on my cover, back cover, and contents pages which can take an hour sometimes. Once that is over I come to the easy part, creating the actual story pages. This has been worked down to a science and can be knocked off in 45 minutes tops. After this is finished I can relax for 2 hours or more while uploading. Afterwards I let everyone who is interested know it's up. It's hard work (roughly 10 hours and 55 min.), but I love it! It is my sincere hope that you do too. Just thought I'd give you a little insight into my creative process.

-Steve
