Olympic Tennis, Sydney

Marat Safin
After Marat Safin's straight sets demolition of Pete Sampras in the final of the US Open there will be a new name on everyone's lips in Sydney and a new favourite for the Olympic gold. Safin's 6-4 6-3 6-3 triumph made him the first Russian and the second youngest player ever to win the US title, and his first Grand Slam victory should give him the self-belief to mount a serious challenge in Sydney.

"I cannot remember playing this well before and I don't remember the match. I served well in the end, I am lucky and I am a winner."

And with Pistol Pete sitting this one out, the rest of the field know that the gold could realistically go to any one of eight or nine competitors. Andre Agassi will be leading the charge from the Americans, while Gustavo Kuerten will be hoping his blistering groundstrokes can erase the memory of a disappointing showing at Flushing Meadows. However, playing with home advantage and voluble partisan support, the three Australians - Patrick Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis - could well be left holding all the aces.

Venus Williams

Meanwhile in the women's competition it's hard to see much beyond the US Team - with Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles and Venus Williams all having an excellent chance of taking home the gold. Serena Williams will be playing doubles alongside her sister and after Venus electric display at Flushing Meadows, who would bet against her making it an Olympic double in Sydney.
