Alex Sanderson
New owner, Brian Kennedy, has given the club much needed financial security but the playing strength still looks suspect. Scrum-half, Brian Redpath, is a very useful acquisition and Jason Robinson is an exciting proposition but some of the young forwards will have to find their feet quickly if they are to hold their own.

The club continues to tap into the New Zealand phenomena with the appointment of Glenn Ross as coach. His predecessor John Mitchell, who left after his no-nonsence approach earned him a job with England, took Sale to their proudest moment to date, a Pilkington Cup final at Twickenham against Leicester in 1997. Ross, who was coach at Wayne Shelford's Northampton at the outset of their revival in fortunes which culminated in the European title last season, has inherited a side which lacks nothing in size, particularly out wide in the backs with wings Steve Hanley and England under-19 Anthony Elliott and some guile in Vaughan Going, signed from London Welsh, and Fijian fly-half Niki Little.

The naming of young back row Alex Sanderson, brother of NEC Harlequins' Pat, as captain is brave and shows the club have one eye firmly fixed on the future. But after a disasterous season last year when only Bedford saved them from the relegation play-offs, Sale must add more firepower to their game especially away from home if they are to avoid another desperate relegation battle.
