The
Dallas Stars were probably the best team in the league over the last year —
but they failed to repeat their 1999 success in the Stanley Cup and lost in the
final to the gutsy New Jersey Devils.
The Devils had
already come from the dead to beat the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference
finals and they then upset the favourites to clinch a 4-2 series win. The relentless
New Jersey team became the first Eastern Conference side to win the Stanley
Cup since they last took the title back in 1995. And goaltender Martin Brodeur
was clearly ecstatic about his team's return to the top: 'This is an unbelievable
feeling. This time around, I think I realized it a little more. And what better
way to stop a losing streak!' |
