The Dons have
been decimated by the loss of Carl Cort (Newcastle, £7m), Ben Thatcher (Spurs,
£5m), Neil Sullivan (Tottenham, free) and Walid Badir (Maccabi Haifa, £250,000)
following their last-day relegation from the Premiership.
Boss Terry
Burton has spent wisely, bringing in Paul Robinson (Newcastle, £1.5m), Mark
Williams (Watford, undisclosed), Des Byrne (St Patrick's Athletic, undisclosed),
Ian Selley (free agent) and Ian Feuer (West Ham, free) but Wimbledon will
still need some time to adjust to the Nationwide League.
Although some
of their best talents have left, if they can keep hold of the likes of John
Hartson and Marcus Gayle and get the best out of the new signings, especially
the lively striker Robinson, the Dons could be pushing hard for the play-offs.
 |
|
Marcus Gayle
|
Hartson failed
to fire the goals to keep them in the Premiership, but the Welsh marksman
should be a regular on the scoresheet this season. Hartson managed a nine
goals in 16 games last year and the bookmakers, at least, are expecting
a far better return this term after making him 10-1 joint-favourite to be
the First Division's top scorer.
