Frederic Kanoute
Expectations for the new season are high at Upton Park, and understandably so. Despite not having much money to spend, Harry Redknapp has got together the best squad in his time at West Ham, possibly the best squad the club has ever had. It will be difficult for the Hammers to break into the top five, but they should be able to improve on last year's position, and if they qualify for Europe it would be a fantastic achievement, although few would seriously expect it.

In Ian Pearce, Stuart Pearce and Joe Cole, Redknapp has some quality players to come back and if you look at Michael Carrick you can see a £10m player coming through the ranks.

Davor Suker

The most significant move in the transfer market over the summer, though, has been the arrival of Davor Suker. West Ham have not had a guaranteed goalscorer for years. They have got Di Canio, Kanoute and Kitson, but you wouldn't call them predatory. They create so many chances they should be up with Manchester United for goals scored but have lacked a penalty box player. They have now got that in Suker and have also got someone who wants to prove his former manager wrong in letting him go.

Nigel Winterburn

Di Canio, however, is the man that makes the difference and does the special things. He is the catalyst and there is no one who can replace him in the team. Hammers fans are praying he stays injury free. Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard are both important in their own ways, but players can come in and do a job in their positions. With Paulo, no one can do what he does.

Improvement is the key word at Upton Park. A good cup run would put a smile on a few faces after what happened last year against Aston Villa. Being knocked-out of the Worthington Cup was the biggest downer of the season for them.
