Stuart Barlow
It was difficult to gauge Rover's true potential last term as their league campaign played second fiddle to fine runs in both the FA Cup and the Worthington Cup - where they reached the final at Wembley.

The losses of Alan Mahon (free transfer to Sporting Lisbon) and David Kelly (free to Sheffield United) were hefty blows and a lot will depend upon the goals of Stuart Barlow, although John Aldridge should guide his side to mid-table.

A 3-1 pre-season win over Leicester, who they lost to in February's Wembley final, was a major plus. City, who had not conceded a goal in four previous pre-season outings, found themselves two goals down after 29 minutes. If Tranmere are to make the same kind of impact on the league as they did in the cup last season then they need a cutting edge in attack.

Clint Hill

Barlow, signed from Wigan on a free transfer, is capable of scoring at any level but he needs to find the net week-in week-out during the next nine months if Rovers are to stand any chance of making the play-offs. The arrival of Wayne Gill, Paul Rideout and Sean Flynn should help, but improving on last season's 13th could still be an uphill struggle.
