Sandy Clark is
one of the most underrated managers in the SPL but he will get the best out
of his players, especially the new faces at McDiarmid Park.
Clark has been
incredibly shrewd in signing Craig Russell from Manchester City on a free
transfer, Thomas Lovenkrands from AB Copenhagen for £100,000, Mohammed Sylla
from Le Mans on a free transfer, three year deal, after impressing in a
friendly game against Norwich, and Paul Hartley from Hibernian for £200,000.
Russell and Hartley, in particular, can make a huge difference this season.

St Johnstone
had a fairly disappointing season last year considering they had finished
in third place in '98-'99. And they mind find it difficult to return to
that standard. Clark's first objective will be for the Saints to finish
in the top six but that is a tall order. Saints lack the kind of support
needed to generate big time success, so McDiarmid Park is not a fortress
like it should be.
Transfers out
include Keith O'Halloran to Swindon Town on a free transfer, Danny Griffin
to Dundee United for £600,000, and John O'Neil to Hibernian on a free. Griffin
will be sorely missed.
