The Saints survived
comfortably in the end last season but expectations are at an all-time high,
probably higher than at any other time in the history of the club.
They have a
big name manager in Glenn Hoddle, and with that comes obvious expectations.
Also, they were not involved in the relegation battle at the end of last
season - having secured their status by Easter. They also have the pressure
of making sure they kick-off in their new stadium in the Premiership.

|
Uwe
Rosler
|
Saints fans
are confident of a top-half finish, largely on the strength of Hoddle's
hard work during the close-season. The most significant move has been the
re-signing of Marian Pahars. Hoddle has persuaded him to sign for another
four years and that is absolutely the best thing they could have done this
summer. The Latvian is a class act and the fans love him.

Mark
Draper
|
Uwe Rosler
is a good signing as he will put pressure on Kevin Davies and James Beattie
up-front. And while the jury is still out on former England boss Hoddle,
pre-season has gone well and he seems to have confidence in his squad, which
is the strongest Southampton have had in years. Long-term, his situation
seems far from clear following the circumstances that led to his appointment,
but he seems to be building for the future and enjoying the challenge.
