The bust of Brian
Clough still dominates the reception at the City Ground, along with photos
of a European Cup-winning era never likely to be repeated for a medium-size
city club.
Manager David
Platt, though, does not feel intimidated, despite the enormous pressure
on him to improve on last season's disappointing performance - Forest finished
14th. With little money available it is difficult to see Platt and Co making
an impact on the top six. The fact that the former England star himself
is considering spearheading the team at the start of the 2000-01 season
suggests that Forest are still desperately short of the kind of strength
in depth required to reach the top-flight.
Platt believes
he has the nucleus of a promotion side in Dave Beasant, Riccardo Scimeca,
Colin Calderwood, Gary Jones, Alan Rogers, the exciting teenager David Prutton,
Jack Lester and Stern John. But apart from Gary Jones (from Tranmere on
a free) and Eugene Bopp (from Bayern Munich on a free) there has been little
in the way of encouraging transfer activity at the City Ground, although
loan signing Robbie Blake can certainly cut the mustard at this level.

Forest have
lost Nigel Quashie to Portsmouth for £600,000, along with Carlos Merino
(to Athletic Bilbao on a free transfer), Thierry Bonalair (to FC Zurich
on a free transfer) and long-serving Mark Crossley (to Middlesbrough on
a free transfer). All pretty sobering stuff if you are a Forest fan.
Much will
hinge on the form of Chris Bart-Williams (a £2 million target for
Atalanta), emerging striker Marlon Harewood and Riccardo Scimeca to sustain
Forest through the 46-game grueller. It's the biggest test yet for Platt
and already the play-offs seem desperately out of reach.
