Motherwell were
slightly unlucky not to have gained third place, and the UEFA Cup spot that
goes with it, in the league last season. They had to beat Rangers on the last
day of the season - which they did 2-0 - but Hearts managed to defeat rivals
Hibs to hang on for third.
They are a
very ambitious club, with two good footballing men - John Boyle and Pat
Nevin - behind them. They will be looking to gain that European place this
season to harbour that ambition. Manager Billy Davies has his team playing
some wonderful football. It has been a bonus that they managed to hold on
to star striker Lee McCulloch, who was starting to grab the attention of
the big guns. However, apart from McCulloch, Motherwell don't have any individual
stars.

Davis has signed
Greg Strong from Bolton for £150,000 and Stuart Elliot from Glentoran for
£100,000. But following Simon Valakari's move to Derby County on a free
transfer, and Sasa Curcic's departure, you feel that Motherwell remain two
or three class players short of a trophy winning side.
