Fabien Barthez
The champions are again seen as the side to beat and Sir Alex Ferguson the manager to out-manoeuvre. On a positive note, for the neutrals at least, this provides massive incentive for the oppposition. But, despite his tremendous success, the Old Trafford boss shows no sign of settling for second best.

United have won the Premiership six times in the last eight years. They have the best manager, the best squad and an insatiable hunger for silverware. Last season they finished 18 points clear of the chasing pack. And now - with the signing of Barthez, and the return of Johnsen, Blomqvist and Brown from injury - they will be even stronger. Can anyone touch them?

David Beckham

Probably not, although the statistics offer a glimmer of hope for the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Leeds. United have a pattern of winning two championships and then losing one (93 and 94, 96 and 97, then 99 and 00), and their poor defensive record is a chink in the armour. Silvestre is suspect, Irwin is ageing and both Nevilles aren't the players that Kevin Keegan thought they were? United also conceded more goals than most of their immediate rivals last year.

However, their defence is unlikely to be as leaky this season. The addition of Barthez and the return of Johnsen and Brown to complement the formidable Stam should see to that. Yet hopefully United's seventh title in nine years won't be nailed down by Easter this year. They will have one eye on regaining the Champions League, and there won't be any mid-season break to Brazil to recharge the batteries.

Paul Scholes

Their remarkable level of success, their squad, and the way most of the Premiership travels to Old Trafford thinking not whether they can win, but how they can keep the score down, though, adds up to one sobering conclusion. Manchester United are probably going to win it again.
