Nick Barmby
Gerard Houllier turned Liverpool around last season and they just missed out on a place in the Champions League. Much will depend on the fitness of Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler in the weeks to come. Houllier knows that expectation, inside Anfield and beyond, is growing for him to deliver a first trophy of his reign, to challenge United and establish Liverpool as a modern force rather than a club with a great future behind them.

Markus Babbel
His first season was about taking stock. Last year a rebuilt squad containing eight new signings worth £36 million showed pedigree and promise but fell two points short of a Champions League place due to a collapse of three defeats in their last four games.

It leaves space for improvement and this summer the total has reached a nice round £50m (though Houllier points out he has recouped around half that in sales) with the addition of Nicky Barmby, Markus Babbel, and Bernard Diomede. It may well rise with the acquisition of Christian Ziege from Middlesbrough. The wage bill certainly has, with Gary McAllister's arrival.

Bernard Diomede

Houllier certainly expects more from his strikers this season, after missing Fowler and Owen for much of the last campaign. Heskey will come under particularly close scrutiny after his £11m move last March, but not as much as Houllier himself.
