Ade Akinbiyi
When Martin O'Neill finally tore himself away from Filbert Street and defected north of the border to Glasgow, many Leicester fans feared that three of their best players - Matt Elliot, Muzzy Izzet and Neil Lennon - would go with him. They didn't however, all three choosing instead to sign new contracts at Filbert Street. This is great news for Leicester and no small tribute to the talents of new manager Peter Taylor. He has the awesome task of following in the footsteps of O'Neill, now with Celtic, but despite having no experience of managing at the highest level, Taylor won many friends coaching England under-21s and Gillingham.

Taylor also has money to spend which is more important than respect when you are preparing go up against the Manchester United's and Arsenal's of this world. Desperately hard-up throughout the 90s, Leicester are now suddenly awash with cash, thanks to the sale of Emile Heskey and a lucrative £12.5m deal with NTL. So far Taylor has spent £10m -more than Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa - on five lower division players: Gary Rowett, Callum Davidson, Simon Royce, Trevor Benjamin and Ade Akinbiyi. Most of them lack experience at the top level, and how they perform will say a lot about Taylor's judgement - and his coaching ability.

Gary Rowett

It's hard to draw too many assumptions from pre-season friendlies, but from what we've seen it's not unreasonable to expect Taylor smooth the Foxes rough edges, and get them playing the same enterprising and insightful football his England U-21's and Gillingham sides were noted for. There could also be a change of formation. During Leicester's final friendly against RKC Waalwijk, Taylor started with 4-4-2, with Rowett, Elliott, Walsh and Davidson in the back four, Collymore and Akinbiyi up front and Darren Eadie on the wing. Yet - ever versatile - he switched to 3-5-2 at half-time.

Muzzy Izzet

The only worry for Leicester fans must be their front line, although Tony Cottee insists he's still got goals left in him. Collymore is brilliantly erratic; Akinbiyi is pacy, powerful and profligate; and Benjamin is big and bustling but very raw. Goals without Heskey could be a problem - and they have been in pre-season. But the Foxes have enough quality elsewhere to maintain their mid-table position.
