Rated the brightest
young manager in the Premiership after taking the club into the Champions
League, David O'Leary is determined to make this Leeds year. The softly spoken
Irishman has worked exceptionally hard during the close-season, bringing in
big-money signings Olivier Dacourt and Mark Viduka, and slaving away to try
and sign other top stars, including Rio Ferdinand, John-Arne Riise, Zoran
Mirkovic, Ugo Ehiogu, Thorstein Helstad, Jason Euell and Geremi.

And, ominously,
it's the players that have slipped through O'Leary's fingers that could
have the biggest influence on what happens at Elland Road during the next
10 moths or so. By rights, Leeds should be many people's tip for the title,
but they remain one or two players short of a title winning side, which
may come as a shock to most Leeds fans.
After all they
finished third last season; have a young, ambitious and improving side;
an impressive chairman and an intelligent manager - and they play the sort
of attacking, exciting football that has the critics purring. But for all
the promise on the field, it is matched by trouble off it. At the time of
writing Lee Bowyer, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Duberry were committed
to Leeds Crown Court for a plea and directions hearing on September 25.
That hearing - and no doubt, the subsequent trial - will rumble uneasily
around the club for months yet.

Viduka

There's also
the problem of the Olympics, dragging Australian internationals Harry Kewell,
Mark Viduka and Danny Milosevic off to Sydney for the whole of September.
How Leeds handle that month - when they are due to play Man City, Coventry,
Ipswich, Derby and Tottenham as well as the possible distractions of the
Champions League - will probably decide their season. And even if his side
come through that period unscathed, O'Leary also faces losing his Aussie
trio for most of March, when Australasian World Cup qualifiers are likely
to take place.
Expect O'Leary's
side to go close, without - in the long run - actually threatening. Manchester
United would find it hard to combat the loss of four of their best players.
Leeds will find it impossible. Elland Road fans can only hope that O'Leary's
fortunes in the transfer market improve.
