Hermann Hreidarsson
Ipswich have been tipped to go straight back down by almost every pundit on the planet - well almost!

But George Burley, who has done a remarkable job at Portman Road on limited resources so far, has now decided identified the areas of his squad that needed strengthening most urgently. Spending a club record £4m on Wimbledon's excellent Herman Hreidarsson will stabilise a defence that definately required some extra meanness, if they're going to survive.

He's signed Tottenham's John Scales on a free transfer as well - who was a class act at Liverpool; but it's several seasons since the former England man has steered clear of injury. A fully-fit Scales, allied to Hreidarsson and England goalie Richard Wright, should make Ipswich a tight unit, especially at Portman Road, where their record has always been good.

There haven't been any problems at the other end of the pitch over the past couple of seasons either. Although David Johnson and Marcus Stewart have no Premiership experience, they certainly have the potential to crack it in the big-time. Stewart has long been recognised as one of the most gifted strikers outside the top flight, and his transfer last season from Huddersfield last season has certainly proved an astute one.

John Scales

Jamaican-born Johnson will be hoping to overcome the confusion over his internationality, and has the pace, guile and sharpshooting to become a revelation in the top-flight. The livewire frontman has seemingly plumped for Scotland after representing England at 'B' level, and Jamaica in a couple of friendlies. James Scowcroft will also appreciate the bigger stage to showcase his talents - the former England U21 star has serious international ambitions to fulfil.

It's the midfield that looks a sandwich short on the eve of the new season. Club captain Matt Holland is as consistent as they come and will shine in the top flight, but apart from the experienced Jim Magilton, there's not enough strength in depth. The permanent addition of Martijn Reuser should help, and if skillful wingbacks Fabian Wilnis and Jamie Clapham can supply enough service to Stewart and Johnson - on the widest pitch in the country - they'll have a realistic chance of staying up. The Blues also have an excellent youth policy - expect wonderkid Titus Bramble to have turned a few heads by the end of the season.

But the club does not have the resources to compete in the top flight, and in David Sheepshanks they have a chairman who will not bankrupt the club in order to avoid relegation. This is no bad thing, but it will not help George Burley this season. Just ask Graham Taylor!

Jamie Scowcroft

But it is equally likely that Burley, like Taylor at Watford last year, will enjoy a season with the big boys while strengthening his squad in the hope of a quick and more fruitful return in 2002. Whether they have the financial muscle to a sufficient impact on the Premeirship remains to be seen - injuries and suspensions to key players will make Burley's job even more difficult. Difficult, but not impossible.
