Either Steve
Bruce has enormous faith in last season's squad or the Terriers are more strapped
for cash than their fans care to believe. To say that it is somewhat surprising
that after going so close to the play-offs last season, Town have not splashed
out to strengthen the squad over the summer, is an understatement. The McAlpine
Stadium faithful are reportedly gobsmacked, and understandably so.
Bruce, who
has pledged his future to Huddersfield despite being linked with the managerial
posts at both Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham, and has also been installed
as the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester
United boss in 2002, does have a squad which ought to be capable of making
a push for the top six again. But, on the evidence of last season's failure,
it remains short of one or two class players.
Bruce assumed
the helm at the McAlpine Stadium last summer after a year in charge at Sheffield
United. The Terriers topped the First Division table before Christmas and
were a permanent fixture in the top six until a final-day defeat at Fulham
saw them drop to eighth. Owners Ian Ayre and Barry Rubery promised to make
money available to to strengthen the squad over the summer in an attempt
to secure promotion next season, but, at the time of writing, only QPR's
Kevin Gallen, who has arrived on a free.

Dean Gorre
|
Huddersfield
have one or two players on trial, including Tomasz Iwan from PSV Eindhoven,
and Bruce has attempted to sign former Terriers star Andy Booth from Sheffield
Wednesday. The way things stand at the moment, though, Huddersfield fans
must rely on the old guard of Chris
Lucketti, Dean Gorre and Martin Smith to improve on last season.
